Wayne State’s new 70,000 square-foot basketball arena is a beautiful, brand-new facility that broke ground in the summer of 2019 and was just completed in October 2021. This new addition to WSU’s campus not only features the Wayne State Warriors collegiate teams but also hosts the NBA’s G League team, the Detroit Cruise.
The new arena more than doubles the seating capacity of the old Matthaei main gym, and also features training and conditioning spaces and increased locker rooms for both men’s and women's teams.
Attention to detail regarding the concrete workmanship is clearly evident, and aesthetics are prominently featured. At the main entrance, an outdoor court was placed as a decorative overlay on the concrete plaza. The color and texture mimic the wood parquet floor of the court inside. Truly a showpiece for the University, and a beautiful example of what concrete artisans can do with concrete!
